If you’re familiar with French vineyards you may want to skip the background and go right to the limerick. That’s right: limerick.

In the French region of Beaune, the Ursuline Sisters produce wine at their estate, the Clos des Ursules. Further south in Rhone lies the estate of Chateauneuf du Pape, or the Pope’s new castle. Legend has it that the older nuns once persuaded a novice to call the Pope by telephone and attempt to sell him some wine from their Clos. Legend further has it that the Pope was selling his Chateauneuf du Pape to the Vatican in great quantities, and wanted no competition.

Here’s the tale:

An eager young Novice from Beaune

Tried to sell the Pope wine on the phone.

But the Pontiff demurred

And said, “Haven’t you heard?

I’m flogging my own brand from Rhone.”
